Fighting an Invisible Disease
One in twenty Australians will be touched by MS, either a family member, a colleague or a friend living with the disease. Despite the large number, MS is often invisible to everyone except the person living with disease, it strikes without warning and leaves no trace. Six months ago we teamed up with Grey Melbourne to help raise awareness of MS and in particular the symptoms that are neither well understood nor easy to explain.
The purpose of the Seeing MS campaign is to explain visually what it is like to live day to day with the symptoms of MS. We heard the idea and were hooked. Visual language is something we live and breathe. It is our job to help convey a message and tell a story in an image. This often involves creating a perfect or hyper-real view of the world. In this case however we are producing something raw, real, a view of the world that has been affected by this disease and in a way that is usually difficult to relate.
Our role was two-fold. Firstly, to work with photographers to help nine people living with MS convey their story, to depict each symptom in an image. Secondly, to translate these into filters that meaningfully represent each of these symptoms. This was the biggest challenge, crafting filters that are symptomatic but that can be applied to any image to create something visually arresting, all the while avoiding the archetypal.
We are passionate about this campaign and the community it has brought together.

[dizziness]
[blurred vision]
The Seeing MS project invited nine photographers to each depict a symptom in a single image, inspired by stories of those touched by the disease. We helped bring these to life.
Below are some of the images we worked on:
[fatigue by juliet taylor] inspired by darcy
[brain fog by sara orme] inspired by jessica anderson
[blurred vision by toby burrows] inspired by emma giunti who is the ambassador for MS
[spasticity by matt hoyle] and [hot & cold by jamie mcfadyen]
